NEOMENTIN-375 Tablets

Each NEOMENTIN-375tablet contains amoxicillin 250mg and clavulanic acid 125mg.

NEOMENTIN-375is an anti-infective combination that consists of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. This combination has a beta-lactam antibiotic and a beta-lactamase inhibitor. This combinational drug is can be used to treat several bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, ear infections, skin infections and respiratory tract infections.

AMOXICILLIN: Derived from a basic penicillin nucleus, amoxicillin is an analog of ampicillin. Just like other beta-lactam antibiotics, amoxicillin works by interfering with the peptidoglycan synthesis in the bacterial cell wall. Transpeptidase is one of the key enzymes involved in bacterial cell wall synthesis, and amoxicillin inhibits the activity of this enzyme. This antibiotic has broad-spectrum activity; however, it is highly susceptible to beta-lactamase degradation, thus it is commonly administered in combination with beta-lactamase inhibitor like clavulanic acid. This combination is also necessary to increase the drug’s spectrum of action against several gram –ve bacteria.

CLAVULANIC ACID: Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor which is derived from the bacteria, Streptomyces clavuligerus. This compound possesses mild antibacterial activity. Clavulanic acid binds to the beta-lactamases present within the bacterial cell and alter their conformation and make the enzymes inactive. With their conformation changes, the enzymes will not be able to bind to amoxicillin and cause its degradation. When administered alone, this compound acts as a mild antibiotic against most of the gram +ve bacteria.
