Esogene-40 Injection

Esogene-40 Injection

Esomeprazole 40mg

Esomeprazole is a synthetic proton-pump inhibitor that prevents the secretion of gastric acid and formation of excess stomach acid. It is an S-isomer of omeprazole. Esomeprazole is largely used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition wherein the acid from the stomach flows backward to the chest region and causes heartburn. Controlling the production of stomach acid is important for the prevention of the esophageal damage and to promote the healing of damaged esophagus.

Esomeprazole belongs to a class of anti-secretory compounds known as the substituted benzimidazoles. This compound in spite of having anticholinergic or H2 histamine antagonistic properties, acts only on the proton pumps to inhibit the acid formation. Esomeprazole is largely metabolized in the liver by the cytochrome P450 system by CY2C19 and CYP3A4.

Esomeprazole works just like the other proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).This drug blocks the proton pumps and eventually prevents acid formation in the stomach. H+ /K+ ATPase is a proton pump in the gastric parietal cells or the stomach. Esomeprazole binds to the proton pump and prevents the influx of H+ ions into the stomach. With its highly specific action on the proton pump, this drug blocks the final step of acid production and eventually reduces the gastric acidity.
