Each BINADIS-500 tablet contains terbinafine 500mg.
Terbinafine is an antifungal drug that is largely used to treat itching, burning and scaling observed in athlete’s foot, ringworm and other fungal infections. It is also used to treat fungal infections of the fingernails and toenails. Terbinafine, when administered, causes ergosterol deficiency in the fungal cells. Ergosterol is an essential component of fungal cells, and its deficiency leads to cell death in fungi.
Mechanism of action:Terbinafine blocks the activity of the enzyme, squalene epoxidase. This enzyme is essential for the first oxygenation step of sterol (ergosterol) synthesis. Inhibiting the activity of squalene epoxidase would lead to deposition of high concentration of squalene within the cell. High concentration of squalene interferes with the membrane function and cell wall formation in fungi. The end result of squalene epoxidase’s activity inhibition is that the fungal cells become ergosterol deficient, which eventually breaks down the cell wall of fungi and cause the death of the fungal cells.
