DESCRIPTION

Bromhexine is intended to support the body’s mechanism for clearing mucus from the respiratory tract. It is a secreolytic, increasing the production of mucus in the respiratory tract and makes the phlegm thinner and less viscous.

Phenylephrine is a sympathomimetic vasoconstrictor that has been used as a nasal decongestant for many years. Phenylephrine constricts the blood vessels in the nasal mucous membranes and allows the air passages to open up. It is a relatively selective alpha-adrenoceptor agonist. The majority of the sympathomimetic action is due to direct stimulation of the adrenoceptors. At 2 therapeutic doses, it does not cause significant stimulation of the central nervous system.

Guaiphenesin has an expectorant action. It reduces sputum viscosity by increasing the volume and water content of the bronchial secretion thereby facilitating the expectoration of sputum.

Chlorpheniramine maleate is a first generation antihistamine which provides prompt relief of itchy-watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, itching of the nose or throat due to respiratory allergies. The effectiveness of first-generation antihistamines in blocking sneezing in colds may be due primarily to neuropharmacological manipulation of histaminic and muscarinic receptors in the medulla.

Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is a pain reliever and a fever reducer. The exact mechanism of action of is not known. Paracetamol is used to treat many conditions such as headache, muscle aches, arthritis, backache, toothaches, colds, and fevers. It relieves pain in mild arthritis but has no effect on the underlying inflammation and swelling of the joint.
