Neomentin CV Tablets

Composition:

Each NEOMENTIN-CV tablet contains amoxicillin 500mg & clavulanic acid 125mg.

Description:

NEOMENTIN-CV is the brand name for the anti-bacterial combination of the beta-lactam antibiotic, amoxicillin and a beta-lactamase inhibitor, clavulanic acid. NEOMENTIN CV addresses various bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, skin infections and genitourinary tract infections.

Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that is derived from ampicillin. Amoxicillin’s mechanism of action involves inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis in the bacterial cells. Amoxicillin binds to transpeptidase enzyme, which is involved in the third and final step of cell wall formation and prevents the cross-linking reaction in the bacterial cell wall. This increases the permeability of the cells and cell contents begin to leak; this eventually leads to the death of the bacterial cells.

Amoxicillin has a broad spectrum activity against Gram +ve and Gram-ve bacteria, but, it is highly susceptible to the beta-lactamase activity. Therefore, it has to be administered in combination with a beta-lactamase inhibitor like clavulanic acid. Clavulanic acid, which also possesses a beta-lactam ring, prevents the enzymatic degradation of amoxicillin, by binding to the beta-lactamase enzyme that is present in the bacterial cell wall.
