Lansoprazole is an anti-ulcer agent that belongs to the class of proton pump inhibitors. It decreases the production of acid in the stomach and thereby soothes heartburns and different types of ulcers, and addresses the acid reflux problems.
Lansoprazole, being a substituted benzimidazole, works by blocking the proton pumps located on the surface of the parietal cells of the stomach. H+/K+ ATPase or the proton pump is the terminal stage of stomach acid production, and blocking this pump prevents the inward movement of H+ ions into the stomach. This eventually reduces the gastric acid production in the stomach and alleviates pain caused due to the ulcers.
