Lutein and Zeaxanthin are natural carotenoids, also referred as the Macular Pigments (MP) represents the primary molecules distributed within the human macula and retina. Lutein is preferentially accumulated in the perifoveal region whereas; Zeaxanthin is abundant in the foveal region. These carotenoids are not synthesized by the human body and their accumulation in the eye is dependent on the dietary intake.Lutein and zeaxanthin in the macula block blue light from reaching the underlying structures in the retina, thereby reducing the risk of light-induced oxidative damage that could lead to macular degeneration (AMD).These two macular pigments potentially serve as a biomarker for protecting against the risk of certain eye diseases but also for visual function.
Vitamin E & C are thetwo age-reducing vitamins, exerting powerful antioxidant activities. Consumption of vitaminC which is a water soluble vitamin helps to reduce the risk of forming a cataract and vision loss from macular degeneration, while vitamin E, a fat soluble vitamin helps to reduce the worsening of early age-related macular degeneration (AMD), decreases the risk of cataracts and improves vision.
Zinc, Copper, Manganese & Selenium are theminerals that slow the growth of cataracts and protect against eye diseases such as glaucoma and age related macular degeneration. Zinc and selenium are the two key minerals that help the oxidation process and help absorb antioxidants for the prevention of eye diseases. While, copper and manganese being the trace minerals help in the development of flexible connective tissue for proper eye structure.
