Each tablet of ELPILL 500 contains levofloxacin 500mg.
ELPILL 500 is the brand name for the potent antibiotic, levofloxacin. This broad spectrum antibiotic belongs to the class of fluoroquinolones. Levofloxacin works by interfering with the DNA replication in the bacteria and eventually leads to the death of the bacterial cells. This drug works as a bactericide.
Levofloxacin works by inhibiting the activity of the enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Topoisomerase IV is responsible for the DNA unwinding during multiplication of the bacterial cells; when this enzyme becomes non-functional, DNA replication is arrested and bacterial growth is prevented. DNA gyrase is important for the supercoiling of the DNA strands. When the functions of these two enzymes are hampered, it leads to breakage in the DNA strands and inhibition of DNA replication and transcription, which will eventually stop the growth of the bacterial cells and kill them.
