Omeprazole is said to be first proton pump inhibitor the history of anti-ulcer agents. This drug is used to treat different types of the ulcers and alleviate their symptoms.
Omeprazole inhibits the gastric acid production by blocking the enzyme system of H+/K+ ATP or the proton pump systems present on the surfaces of the parietal cells of the stomach. This drug is highly specific in its activity and this is because omeprazole needs an acidic environment to become activated and parietal cells are acidic in nature. And therefore, parietal cells are the only region where most of the omeprazole molecules can be activated. In non-acidic regions of the body, omeprazole is rather stable, only with a minute quantity of the compound getting activated.
