Acne Treatment-ADADIS Gel

Each gram of ADADIS gel contains:

  • Adapalene : 0.1%
  • Benzoyl peroxide : 2.5 %

Description

ADADIS gel is indicated for the topical (on the skin) treatment to treat acne vulgaris in patient 9 years of age and older. This medication is a combination of adapalene (a retinoid) and benzoyl peroxide (an antibiotic and skin-peeling agent). This product may decrease the number and severity of acne pimples and promote quick healing of pimples that do appear.

Adapalene works by affecting the growth of cells and decreasing swelling and inflammation. Benzoyl peroxide works by reducing the amount of acne-causing bacteria and by causing the skin to dry and peel off.

Adapalene binds to specific retinoic acid nuclear receptors but does not bind to cytosolic receptor protein. Biochemical and pharmacological profile studies have demonstrated that adapalene is a modulator of cellular differentiation, keratinization and inflammatory processes. However, the significance of these findings with regard to the mechanism of action of adapalene for the treatment of acne is unknown.

Benzoyl peroxide is an oxidizing agent with bactericidal and keratolytic effects.

Direction for Use

ADADIS gel is for topical use only and not for oral, ophthalmic (pertaining to the eye) or intravaginal use.

Wash your hands before applying this medication. Gently clean the affected skin and pat dry. Apply a thin layer of this medication usually once daily or as directed by your doctor. Use your fingertips to apply a small amount of medication (about the size of a pea) to the affected area of the face (e.g., forehead, chin, each cheek). Avoid the eyes, lips and mucous membranes. Do not rinse after applying. Let the gel work deep inside the skin. Apply ADADIS gel to areas where pimples and excess oil occurs. Once your skin has cleared, continue using ADADIS gel to keep new pimples from forming.

Precautions

  • Do not use this gel if you have sensitive skin or if you are sensitive to adapalene or benzoyl peroxide.
  • Use this medication on the skin only. Do not apply to the inner lip area, inside the nose/mouth, or on mucus membranes. Do not apply to cut, scraped, sunburned or eczema-affected skin.
  • Avoid getting this medication in your eyes. If this medication gets into your eyes, flush with large amounts of water. Call your doctor if eye irritation develops. Wash your hands after using the medication to avoid accidentally getting it in your eyes.
  • Your dosage and treatment plan is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.
  • During the first few weeks of using ADADIS gel, your acne might appear worse because the medication is working on pimples forming inside the skin.
  • Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time each day. Do not use a larger amount or use it more frequently than recommended. Your skin will not improve faster and it will increase the risk of developing redness, peeling and pain.
  • Not recommended for use below age 9 years. Safety and effectiveness of ADADIS gel in pediatric patients under the age of 9 has not been established. In case of pregnancy consult your doctor. It is not known whether adapalene or benzoyl peroxide is excreted in human milk following use of ADADIS gel. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when ADADIS gel is administered to a nursing woman.
  • Using other acne medication at the same time or immediately following the use of this product may increase dryness or irritation of the skin. If this occurs, only one medication should be used unless directed by a doctor.

Side effects

Skin irritation may occur characterised by redness, burning, itching, peeling or possibly swelling. Mild irritations may be reduced by using this product less frequently or in a lower concentration. If irritation becomes severe, discontinue use. If irritation still occurs consult your doctor.

It is advised to patients to minimize exposure to sunlight, including sunlamps. Recommend the use of sunscreen products and protective apparel, (e.g., cap/hat) when exposure cannot be avoided.
